The Manali-Leh Highway (NH3) is one of the highest motorable roads in the world, crossing five major mountain passes and traversing three distinct Himalayan landscapes. Sarchu sits perfectly at the halfway mark — making it the natural and most rewarding overnight halt.
Starting point. Fuel up, check permits, service your vehicle. Last major city with all facilities.
First major pass. Often congested with tourists. Start early (6am) to beat traffic and reach Sarchu safely.
Junction of Manali-Leh and Spiti Valley roads. Cafés and fuel available.
District HQ of Lahaul. Ideal acclimatisation halt for first-timers. ATM, fuel, and basic hospitals available here.
Popular bikers' camp stop. Last fuel point before a long stretch.
Army checkpost. Carry ID and vehicle documents. Last mobile connectivity for a while.
ICONIC: Second highest pass on the route. Snow year-round. Drive slowly. Suraj Tal lake is just below.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required. Get it from the DC Office, Manali. Also carry vehicle RC, insurance, driving licence, and photo ID for all checkposts.
Last fuel at Tandi/Keylong. No pumps between there and Leh (~350km). Carry an extra 10–15L jerry can.
Roads close due to rain, landslides, and snow. Check BRO road status at +91-1800-180-3100 or lahaul-spiti.nic.in before departure.
BSNL works in some areas. Jio/Airtel lose signal after Rohtang. Carry an offline map (Maps.me or Google Maps offline area).
